Popular micro-enterpreneurship and solidarity-based economy: the meaning of a change

This article seeks, first, to account for the diversity of the universe of micro- entrepreneurs by providing a categorization of their major forms departing from a plural conception of economic systems. Secondly, it attempts to discuss the meaning of transformation of forms of popular economy in a case where the metaphor of metamorphosis can express its hybrid nature and lack of discontinuities. Finally, it questions the conditions from which one can expect that these forms of popular economy will give rise to solidarity-based (rather than individualistic) forms of producing, distributing and consuming. The views expressed are the result of the author's reflection from a study on micro-entrepreneurs in Portugal and that consisted of a detailed analysis of how their initiatives arise, are supported and developed. For this purpose the experiences of micro-enterpreneurs are compared with the view of those professionals and policy makers who are supposed to support them.
