Abstract

This paper presents data on diet of Lontra longicaudis in a coastal stream with riparian canopy in southern Coastal Plain on Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. From February 2007 to May 2008, 242 feces samples and six feeding remains were collected in an approximately 1,100 m length stretch of Bolaxa stream, at Reserve Area of Lagoa Verde. The most common items identified were fishes (82,6%), followed by decapod crustaceans (20,6%). Other items, found less often, were birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and mollusks. In the feeding remains it was possible to identify Conepatus chinga (Carnivora: Mephitidae) and Rhamdia quelem (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae). Among the fishes, the most common family in the feces sample was Cichlidae (59,5%) followed by Curimatidae (32,6%). Other families, found less often, were Erythrinidae, Heptapteridae, Characidae, Mugilidae, Callichthyidae and Synbranchidae. A varied diet was observed, in parts as effect of the surrounding environments influence on the study area.
