Semantic analysis of the common names ascribed to the Passiflora species (Passifloraceae) in the state of Bahia, Brazil
Abstract
The genus Passiflora is represented by 31 species with ample distribution and occurs in almost all biomes in the state of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil. Based on previous study about the Passiflora species from Bahia and considering the common names ascribed to some species by these authors, this article deals with the lexeme ‘maracujá’ from a semasiological perspective, seeking to understand the linguistic construction of that term. This article has a cognitive ethnobotany approach and relates to the study area of linguistic ethnobiology, which investigates the relationship between human beings and the plants as mediated by language.
Key words: ethnobotany, ethnotaxonomy, phytonomy.
