D.F. Rocco, a builder in Porto Alegre, Brazil: About urban houses, Italian immigrants and dissemination of architecture
Abstract
The urban households of the two-story type, built on narrow terrain and produced in the 1920s in Porto Alegre, Brazil, by a builder with an Italian surname, D.F. Rocco, show similarities to the architecture performed in the early 20th century by architects from Italy in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Using primary and secondary sources, the present paper aims to stimulate further studies on the subject. The comparative method applied to similar historical moments opens the possibility to the phenomenon of an exchange of ideas. The mobility of characters and the geographical proximity of distinct cities from different countries, destinies of Italian migration, can be seen as decisive factors for the propagation of architectural manifestations. Simultaneously, it is intended, with the presentation of small works by D.F. Rocco, to recognize the value of the contribution of architectures that form the backdrop of the urban landscape, which, in an extended sense and in some way, are part of the history of Porto Alegre and its built heritage.
Keywords: D.F. Rocco, history of Porto Alegre, architecture of Italians.
