The naturalization of differences. Criminal representations and crónica roja through the newspaper Clarín. Chile, 1954-1973
Abstract
This investigation seeks to study the tabloid newspaper Clarín, in circulation during the years 1954 to 1973, from the perspective of the presentation and narration of police news within the so-called crónica roja. Through this section, we attempt a specific approach to the constructed view regarding delinquents and criminals, assessing not only the period’s context, but also the role that the newspaper played as an actor of that time and a printed carrier of such information. It is argued that the crónica roja in Clarín would not only help reinforce stereotyped images of some members of the social body but would also conceive of the offence and crime as consumer products.
Keywords: representation, print media, crónica roja, delinquents, criminals.
