Abstract

In Brazil of the transition of the 19th and 20th centuries, when the presence of Americans increased and the relationship with the United States was strengthened, baseball games were organized in some cities in which the sporting field was in the process of consolidation, articulated with movements of adherence to the ideals and imagery of modernity. In this context, how was baseball represented? Can such games be considered as antecedents of the American cultural influence that would become more remarkable from the 1930s onwards? Considering these questions, this study aimed to investigate the experiences with baseball promoted in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo of the period. The sources used were magazines and newspapers published in the two capitals. It was possible to perceive the peculiarities of the process of cultural transit, as certain meanings conferred to baseball were different from those conceived in its country of origin.
