How to reconstruct the past? Ernst Kantorowicz and the History writing as national literature
Abstract
Kaiser Friedrich der Zweite [Frederick the Second: 1194-1250] was published in 1927 by Ernst Kantorowicz, an oficial membership of Stefan George Circle. This work initiated an extensive debate between the medievalist Albert Brackmann and the author of the biography. In general, the discussions brought important questions on the theoretical and methodological principles of the historical knowledge. Thus, this article aims to present this controversy, analyzing its substantial questions. Calling attention to the George Circle’s proposals for historiography, we also try to understand the paper of this debate in its intellectual context.
Keywords: Stefan George Circle, German historiography, interpretation.
