Tomás Guevara and the Mapuche people
Abstract
This paper aims to discuss Tomás Guevara’s (1863-1935) indigenism based on the interference of the ideal of nation and the conception of an educational solution to the imagined “indigenous problem”. Guevara was principal of the Liceo de Hombres de Temuco and one of the precursors in the development of ethnographic studies on the Mapuche people. He wrote under the influence of positivism, of evolutionism and of racial theories. His discourse reveals his concern about forming a cultural homogeneity capable of delimiting the chilenidad. Vis-à-vis this ideal, the mapuche culture was represented as interdicted and education as a tool to disseminate the national ideals, aiming to dilute cultural differences.
