“Tell me how you play and I will tell who you are...”: Football playing styles in Pasolini, Freyre and DaMatta

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a reflection about some of the most important theories explaining the styles of playing football and their correlations with national identities. Therefore, it selected the conceptions of three renowned intellectuals: Gilberto Freyre, Roberto Da Matta and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Their theories were elaborated starting from dualisms, respectively: Apollonian versus Dionysian style; art football versus strength football; football in poetry versus football in prose. Although guided by different arguments, the three authors point to the same thesis: that there are many different styles of playing and they were naturally built, especially under the impact of cultural diversity among the countries of South America and Europe.

Graduado em Educação Física (UFPR) e Psicologia (UTP) com mestrado e doutorado em História (UFPR) e estágio pós-doutoral também em História pela Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia (com apoio da CAPES). Atualmente é professor na UFPR, onde orienta mestrandos e doutorandos nos Programas de Pós-Graduação em História e Educação Física. Membro da Società Italiana di Storia dello Sport e do Núcleo de Estudos Futebol e Sociedade.
