The land in dispute: Local town councils versus commissioner judges
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present the internal conflicts in the political, economic and social elite of Cruz Alta and Santo Antonio da Palmeira at the late nineteenth century. The expansion of the occupation of forest areas and the emergence of several settlements sparked a dispute involving major landowners, local town councils and commissioner judges. Squatters who were yerba mate collectors were also involved in the dispute.
Keywords: rural land owners, local town councils, commissioner judges.
