Transnational Catholic networks and Fidei Donum priests in the State of Maranhão (1960-1980)

Abstract

This article discusses the phenomenon of the redefinition of priests’ functionsin Brazil, focusing on the reconfi gurations of the Catholic space worldwide since the 1960s. Based on the study of the patterns of international circulation of missionary priests, it analyzes the reconfi gurations of Catholic transnational networks, highlightingthe promotion of new forms of exchanging ideas, practices and cultures betweenNorth and South. Finally, it examines two institutional and missionary confi gurationsin which those foreign priests started their action and developed their commitments inthe Brazilian State of Maranhão.

Wheriston Silva Neris, Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), Campus III/Bacabal.

Doutor em Sociologia pelo Núcleo de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Ciências Sociais - Universidade Federal de Sergipe (NPPCS/UFS) tem mestrado em Ciências Sociais - PPGCSO/UFMA e possui graduação em História pela Universidade Federal do Maranhão (2007). É professor de Sociologia do Campus III – UFMA/Bacabal e pesquisador vinculado ao Laboratório de Estudos sobre o Poder e a Política - LEP/UFS e ao Grupo de Pesquisa História e Religião - GPHR/UFMA. Seus estudos se concentram nos domínios da Sociologia Histórica do Catolicismo, das formas de Construção Social do Político e da Sociologia Política das Instituições.

Ernesto Seidl, Departamento de Sociologia e Ciência Política, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)

Bacharel em Ciências Sociais, Mestre e Doutor em Ciência Política pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, com estágio de Doutoramento pela Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales de Paris. É professor Associado do Departamento de Sociologia e Ciência Política da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). Integra o Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia Política da UFSC e o Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia da Universidade Federal de Sergipe. Membro do Núcleo de Pesquisa em Movimentos Sociais (NPMS/UFSC). Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq - Nível 2. Atua na área de Sociologia Política, com ênfase em estudos sobre Elites e Grupos Dirigentes e Processos de Politização.
