The inhabitants’ “qualities” and the mestizo family’s formation in colonial Minas Gerais (1720-1780)
Abstract
The article examines how people of different “qualities” (white, black, creole,mestizo, mulatto, “pardo”, “cabra”, and “mamaluco”) and social and legal conditions(freeman, freedman and slave) formed the mestizo family and how it was establishedas a very common and viable alternative in colonial Minas Gerais, specifically in Riodas Velhas and Serro Frio Counties. Some attempted to demonstrate how concubinagerelations, guided by the social subjects’ differences and inequalities, allowed the formationof mixed families and innovative situations capable of transforming existing social andlegal hierarchies.
