This study aims to discuss the experience of bullfighting organized in 19th century Porto Alegre, considering its relationship to the circulation of ideas of modernity in progress at that time. To reach this objective, newspapers published in the city between the years 1875 and 1900 were used as sources, especially A Reforma, A Federação, Gazeta da Tarde and Correio do Povo. We hope to cast a glance at the state capital in that transition century, including aspects related to the peculiarities of traffic and reception of modern discourses.
