Caboclos
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss the different meanings common to the Portuguese word caboclos. Initially, in the colonial period, it was used to refer to the Brazilian indigenous population. It has also been used, on the basis of racial criteria, to distinguish the result of crossing between Indians and whites. However, in the case of the states that form the southern region of Brazil, viz. Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, this word has historically been applied to identify a population group that is made ??up of poor farmers and has its own social and cultural particularities. So, reflecting on this question and showing the historical, social and political importance of knowing these different definitions are among the main issues addressed throughout the article.
Keywords: caboclos, representation, history.
