Inquisition in Colonial Amazon: Methodological reflections

Abstract

This article aims to present an experience of a quantitative research project on the role of the Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in the State of Maranhão and Grão-Pará and to draw attention to methodological problems in the analytic treatment of data on the Inquisition. To do so, it offers a new approach on the subject as a result of the extended use of inquisitorial documentation, seeking to contribute to a reflection on the use of these sources.
