In the heat of the moment. Politics and the press in the early years of Brazilian Liberalism
Abstract
The article is a brief presentation of the book Memórias ecônomo-políticas sobre a administração pública no Brasil, written by Antonio José Gonçalves Chaves and published in 1822-1823. The text discusses some political circumstances of its publication and reception in the early 19th century. Special attention is given to three elements that show up in the volume: the relations between Brazil and Portugal at that political conjuncture; issues related to slave labor and the need to increase the presence of free labor in the country, and, finally, the question of distribution of uncultivated land in the vast Brazilian territory.
Key words: Portuguese-Brazilian politics, liberalism, slavery, land, Rio Grande do Sul, memories.
