Chilenization, taxes and the rental of agricultural lands in the Andean Area of Tarapacá (Northern Chile, 1883-1932)

Abstract

This article deals with the dynamics of ties and conflicts present in the Andean area of the Tarapacá province in northern Chile. These dynamics emerged from the payment of taxes for rural premises such us the rental of agricultural lands during the first five decades of the Chilean administration. In this context, the article focuses specifically on describing and analyzing the conducts of fiscal agents and indigenous peasants. It is also centered on the main aspects of Chilenization such as the adaptive devices used by the local population vis-à-vis the new provisions and legal and administrative orientation imposed by Chile in relation to the Andean productive resources.
