The National Guards in Argentina during the national organization: Balances and historiographical perspectives
Abstract
This article discusses the main contributions of Argentine historiography related to the National Guards from the 1970s onwards. This institution, which, together with the Regular Army and the provincial militias, formed the National Argentine Army starting in 1853, was practically ignored by historians until the beginning of the last decade. After the series of books published by the Military Circle in the early 1970s, the National Guards occupied very little space in academic circles until ten years ago, when famous historians and researchers in training began to study that institution from different perspectives and historiographical aspects that contribute to render the view on the 19th century in Argentina more complex.
Key words: National Guards, historiography, balances, new perspectives, 19th century.
