The Cousiño business family and the coal industry in Chile: 1852-1952

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes the trajectory of the Cousiño business family and its participation in the development of the coal industry in Chile over a hundred years, where through the creation of a family business it was a pioneer in the exploitation of coal in the area of Arauco, raising a modern industrial mining complex, which had a copper smelter, refractory brick factory, port and a fleet of vapors for the transport of ore and copper, with special emphasis on the evolution of the business and its administration by the Cousiño business family in their business succession processes and the management of the mining business over three generations.
