European and North American capital and nationalization of the Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) rail system (1890-1928)
Abstract
This article analyzes the undertakings of European and US capital in the rail system of Rio Grande do Sul State (Brazil) between 1890 and 1928, and traces the State and Federal Government interventions in it, seeking to understand the multiple interests involved, i.e. governments, municipal politicians, traders, producers, workers and international investors. The text is based on extensive documentary research, using journalistic sources, official reports, parliamentary annals and correspondences, trying to explain the various models of railway policy attempted in the state and examining the causes that led to the expropriation of the Railroad in 1920, as well as the political and economic consequences of this state intervention in the economy.Downloads
