Anabaptists beyond historiographic reductionism
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the Anabaptists can’t be reducedto the historiographical explanation that they were marginalized peasants. Whenanalyzing the sources, one perceives that it was an urban sect, even with the participationof members of the elite. In the first moment, the article analyzes the historiography on theAnabaptists, widely disseminated in Brazil. In the second part, it demonstrates, throughthe analysis of some sources, the social origins of the Anabaptists. It concludes with acorrection of the historiography and a review.Downloads
