Salt, yeast, torch: controversies around catholicism and politics in laters 60’s Chile.
Abstract
This paper seeks to analyze a set of documents which express debates andinterventions of the Catholic Church in Chilean politics in the late 1960s. I will addresssuch analysis from a political and intellectual history perspective. To do so, I work withthe lay movement critics to the decision making processes available at the institution,as well as with the Pastoral Charter and its reactions. By observing these sources, it ispossible to propose a certain legitimacy auto perception and the need for the catholicscope to intervene in politics during accelerated social change.
