Space-time and agents in Amerindian cosmologies and histories of the Central Andes

Abstract

The main aim of this article is to highlight and compare the conceptions ofspace-time and agent in cosmologies and histories written by Amerindians from theCentral Andes at the beginning of the colonial period. The purpose is to understandhow concepts originating from the Amerindian and Christian traditions of thought wereappropriated, re-signified or articulated in those writings. In addition, we will considerthe presence of new concepts, invented in that period. In order to achieve this goal, wewill analyse three texts produced between 1580 and 1615, which are some of the mostanalysed sources in studies dedicated to the theme of Andean cosmologies and histories:the Relación de antiguedades deste reyno del Pirú, of Joan de Santa Cruz Pachacuti YamquiSalcamaygua, the Nueva corónica y buen gobierno, of Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala, andthe Manuscrito de Huarochirí, of controversial authorship.
