“The Popular Cook”, Quaresma Book Store and the dissemination of Brazilian cuisine in the early 20th century
Abstract
This article examines the culinary book as a legitimate source for the historian.From it, it is possible to make rich interpretations about societies and their social, political,economic, and cultural aspects. O Cozinheiro Popular, published by Livraria Quaresma,contributed to the dissemination of reading understood as popular with a nationalistcharacter, with a criticism of the French-style Brazilian elite in the first decades of theRepublic. With several editions and print runs of thousands of copies? throughout thetwentieth century, it was engaged in the task of elaborating the sense of national cuisinein the conciliation between territorial unity and regional diversity.Downloads
