The centennial commemoration of the independence in Mexico: Paseo de la Reforma as a stage for the pacifying of the past in 1910
Abstract
Th e text discusses the Porfi rian project that shaped the commemorations of the fi rst centennial of the Mexican independence, analyzing the construction of monuments and a civic parade that took place at the Paseo de la Reforma avenue. Th is project, designed to pacify the past, intended to show Mexico as a country of solid mestizo (Spaniard and Aztec) traditions, whitened, rich and fl ourishing. Th e relations between material culture, memory and this project of mestizaje are discussed in the article’s conclusion.
