Three concepts of Atlantic History
Abstract
The present essay is part of a collection of works which selected key themes related to the British Atlantic history and its development throughout three centuries. David Armitage defines a general framework for Atlantic history as a historical field, its possible temporal frames and the development of investigations using the Atlantic approach. Armitage pusher further and proposes three different spatial and temporal concepts: Cis-Atlantic history, Circum-Atlantic history and Trans-Atlantic history. It is, therefore, an essential work for the understanding of American colonial history, as it allows the investigator to broadly perceive the fluidity and movement of people, goods and ideas in the modern world.
Keywords: Atlantic history, colonial history, investigation field.
