From immigrant to businessman: development and activities of the navigation company of Nicolás Mihanovich (1875-1919)
Abstract
The article reconstructs the history and activities of an important navigation company belonging to the immigrant/businessman, Nicolás Mihanovich in the La Plata River Basin. The period under discussion comprises the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, when the economic activities in Argentina, in general, and in the La Plata River region, in particular, experienced a significant economic and commercial development because of the growth that occurred in agriculture, in extraction activities, in cattle raising, in the industries that established in the region and in the development of fluvial transportation. This took place in a context characterized by an increase in the immigrant population and its integration into the economic activities in Argentina. Thus, the role played by this particular immigrant/businessman is worth an analysis not only because of his experiences before immigrating, but also because of his ability to adapt and face adversities in an unknown environment.
Key words: fluvial navigation, La Plata River Basin, navigation company, history of business.Downloads
