From supporting actors to protagonists: following the tracks of some Kaingang leaders in Southern Brazil
Abstract
The article discusses the role played by Kaingang leaders in Southern Brazil who acted as protagonists in the history of the indigenous people. It initially introduces the historical context and lists many of the Kaingang chiefs who played a leading role in relation to national society during the 20th century in the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. It then describes the activities of four contemporary Kaingang leaders, mainly in the second half of the 20th century and the first years of the 21st century, taking into account some of their speeches made to the world of the white people.
