Justice, common good, freedom, authority and submission as a way to reinforce the power of the prince in the vision of Bossuet
Abstract
For Bossuet the prince should give good examples, such as exercising the justice and acting on behalf of the common good to promote the peace in the kingdom. That images were inserted in the symbolic world of the century French XVII and that they were used to reinforce the absolutist power of the monarch. In the conception of Bossuet, the Protestantism freedom of expression leads to the subjects’ non-compliance to the authority of the prince. He criticizes the Protestantism at the same time that he defends the Catholic religion. In his understanding, the Catholic religion is the base of the royal power; the element that turns subjects to the laws of the Church submissive to the laws of the State. The Catholic religion is the most efficient way the kings possess to be obeyed.
