A passing look: A photo album between memory, forgetfulness and imagery
Abstract
Photo albums constitute collections of visual fragments of the city. They are made up of selected photographic images that are gathered and organized according to the editor’s eye. By reading the albums and their photographic images it is possible to construct meaningful narratives about the urban space. The photographic narratives operate with visibility and invisibility, which in turn create forgetfulness and memories. In this paper I analyze the photo album “Recordações de Porto Alegre” [Memories of Porto Alegre], published at the occasion of the celebration of the Centennial of the Farroupilha Revolution that took place in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in 1935. I try to understand how this publication and the exhibition in which it was integrated became vehicles of images of urban modernity. Furthermore, on the basis of this visual narrative I try to understand how people construct the memories of a modern city and the forgetfulness of the colonial city that they want to leave behind.
