The Jesuit ars moriendi: the history of a psychological practice
Abstract
This paper analyzes the theoretical background, goals and methods of the Jesuit ars moriendi, on the basis of handbooks of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Jesuits’ psychological and spiritual counselling practices were a heritage from the late Middle Ages and its main characteristics were an integration of affective, moral and spiritual aspects and a particular attention to individual differences. The Jesuit ars moriendi combined the Aristotelian psychology and the consolatory tradition in Europe and mission lands.
