Nationalism and patriotism in Argentina and Brazil in the 1920’s and in the 1930’s through the artistic careers of Carlos Gardel and Carmen Miranda
Abstract
The article analyzes the participation of Carlos Gardel and Carmen Miranda in the construction and exaltation of the Brazilian and Argentine national identities focusing on the nationalism in their songs and movies. For that purpose, it introduces the theoretical framework used in the analysis and relates their artistic careers with the historical context in which they became national idols, especially with development of the mass media. Finally, it analyzes representations that show the nationalism present in some songs of both artists.
