Civilization, barbarity and the spatial representations of the nation in the 19th century Americas
Abstract
Based on the core argument that the dichotomy between civilization and barbarity was one of the keys for the representation of the nation in the 19th century Americas, the article analyzes how the concept of nation was expressed in the texts and actions of some Latin Americans intellectuals. It points out the importance they attributed to nature in the constitution of the particular and national characteristics of a territory, a people and its history. It analyzes how in the projects of nation proposed by these authors the ideas of civilization and barbarity acquire new and different meanings related to nature and are recurrently expressed in dichotomous spatial representations such as pampas/city, interior/coast. These images are used as major analytical instruments in the thinking and discourses of these authors. Thus it is important to investigate their various meanings and developments.
