The new beginning in the forest: Notes for an environmental history of German colonization in Rio Grande do Sul
Abstract
This article discusses the German colonization in Rio Grande do Sul in the 19th century from the perspective of environmental history. It pays special attention to the relations between the settlers and the subtropical forest and analyzes the immigrants’ first contacts with the regional flora and fauna. It also discusses the “civilizing deforestation” undertaken in the old colonies and its environmental impact.
