From “gifted young woman” to “super-powerful girl”: an analysis of the sections of readers’ letters’ of the magazine Capricho (1954-2004)
Abstract
The article tries to cover the possible transformations in the gender relations and sexuality in the past five decades. It describes these transformations by analyzing the places that a magazine for females reserved and reserves to women. For that purpose, it discusses the sections of readers’ letters of Capricho magazine (1954-2004). This survey raised questions such as: “Of which woman and to which woman has Capricho spoken in these 50 years?”, “How are the gender relations being constructed?”. The analysis of the material made it possible to contextualize the construction of women’s images and of sexuality between 1950 and the 21st century and to reflect on it. It also allowed the observation that, in spite of many changes that occurred, in some cases the same discourse survives under new clothes.
Key words: gender relations, sexuality, women’s press.Downloads
