The Upper Douro between regulatory systems: from protectionism to free trade (1852-1865)
Abstract
Based on studies by economic historians, this paper seeks to understand the passage from protectionist modes of state intervention to a liberal economic regime in the Douro region, whose wine production represented a key component in the Portuguese national economy. The study focuses on the debates around the wine issue between protectionists and free traders, which pervaded regional and national society, from the governments to the political groups represented in the Parliament and economic interest groups. Thus, it tries to understand the political and economic forces at play and the reasons for the collapse of protectionism, until the imposition of a free trade model and the corresponding consequences in the region.
Key words: demarcated region of Douro, port wine, free trade, protectionism.Downloads
