A sketch of the literature of the expelled Portuguese Jesuits
Abstract
Remembering the 250th anniversary of the expulsion of the Portuguese Jesuits by the Marquis of Pombal (September 1759) and the 200th anniversary of the death of the wise polygraph from la Mancha, abbot Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro (1735-1839), the article discusses the consequences that the Marquis of Pombal’s repressive policy had on the literary works written by the expelled Portuguese Jesuits, which were collected by Hervás in his Spanish-Jesuit Library. It aso describes the hardships faced by exiled Portuguese Jesuits, mainly in the light of the Diary of the Jesuit, Manuel Luengo.
