Guerrilla narratives in the feminine (Southern Cone, 1960-1985)
Abstract
By analyzing the course of life of women who fought in left wing guerrilla movements, our intention is to describe a comparative perspective between the Southern Cone countries Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. These countries experienced military dictatorships and left wing guerrilla movements between the 1960s and the 1980s. Women played a more distinguished role in this “new left wing” than they had played in the traditional one, and the participation in the guerrilla gave many women the political legitimacy for later participation in public life, even when such participation happened during exile. In order to perform such analysis we have used recent interviews with women from the different countries afore mentioned. There are certain regularities and similarities in their report that lead us to a historical process which crossed the borders and greatly influenced the political paths walked by all those countries.
