Republic, federalism and frontier
Abstract
At the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the Brazilian Republic, the article discusses the republic and federalism in the context of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and especially the figure of Gaspar Silveira Martins, who was an advocate of parliamentarism and federalism with a perspective different from the positivistic view of Castilhism. In addition, as a recognition of his defense of the European immigration, his name was given to Quarta Colônia Imperial de Imigração Italiana do Rio Grande do Sul. From this perspective, the article analyzes the topics of federalism, republic and frontier during the period of implementation of the Brazilian Republic, highlighting the political actions of Gaspar Silveira Martins.
