Abstract: This paper analyzes the policies for the fishery sector in Brazil and Argentina during the Interwar period. During this challenging period, both countries were engaged into a fight for strategic supremacy in South America. In that context, the control of the Southern Atlantic Ocean was of paramount importance, which reflected on a more important role for the fishery industry.as a whole. The attempt to build a modern fishery industry also reflected an aspiration from both countries to expand its commodities export market. Moreover, the fishery policy during the Interwar Period also reflected some important political trends of that period, such as: nationalism, corporatism and authoritarianism.
