Abstract

This article analyzes a case of popularization of science through the translation in the periodical press made by Venezuelan scholar Andrés Bello of some excerpts of the Elements of Physics or Natural Philosophy (1827) by Scottish physician Neil Arnott. His translation of the excerpts was first published in 1827 in London in El Repertorio Americano, and then republished in November 1831 in the Chilean newspaper El Araucano. The translation strategy brought by Bello in this text follows a pedagogical endeavour, common within the Spanish American culture of the XIXth century, to popularize useful scientific knowledge to educate readers. It will be analyzed how the production context surrounding this work as well as the translation strategy highlights different translation procedures carried out by Bello, especially, simplifications, adaptations, as well as omissions.
