Abstract

Considering the possibility of looking at the circulation of ideas of modernity in 19th century Porto Alegre, this study aims to discuss the first experiences of skating organized in this city between 1878, when the pioneer Skating-Rink Americano was founded, and 1882, when both Rink Cosmopolita and Park Harmonia were operating simultaneously. Considering the vitality of the press in the period, to reach our goal we have used newspapers, mainly advertisements of rinks, as our sources. As a conclusion, we suggest that, by forging new tastes and educate people’s sensibility for a greater exhibition of the body, skating contributed to the dynamism of the changing city.

Keywords: skating, leisure, modernity.
