Abstract

In the early stages of dictator Alfredo Stroessner’s rule, Argentina-Paraguay relations were characterized by the claim of a shared history and culture, a mainstay of “Argentinian-Paraguayan brotherhood”. This stand was supported by the return of the Triple Alliance War trophies to Paraguay in 1954, by the then Argentinian President Juan Domingo Perón. We argue that such a historical and cultural claim was crucial for Argentina to counteract Brazil’s increasing influence in the region, since the initiatives of approximation taken by Perón were based on “Americanism”. As far as Paraguay is concerned, the aforementioned claim allowed the country to develop a bidirectional foreign policy with Argentina and Brazil, not necessarily aligned with Brazilian policies. However, it was a troubled process. This paper analyses that process as represented in the Paraguayan newspaper Patria, regulated by Stroessner’s Party, the Partido Colorado.
