Movie theaters: space of leisure and sociability in São Leopoldo
Abstract
The article analyzes the movie theaters of São Leopoldo as spaces that promoted leisure and sociability, specifically in the first half of the 1940s. Its goal is to discuss in which way the cinemas’ program was inserted in the sociocultural context of the period – marked by the unfolding of the World War II and the strong nationalization campaign undertaken by the Brazilian president Getúlio Vargas – as well as the local public’s involvement with films and the importance of the exhibition rooms in the city’s everyday life. The study’s main source is the Correio de São Leopoldo newspaper, the main periodical of the time, analyzing all the stories related to movie theaters based on the methodology of content analysis. Thus, it was possible to infer that the movie theaters were privileged spaces of interaction of São Leopoldo’s society during the 20th century.
Keywords: cinema, leisure, sociability.
