The role of historians in the Interdisciplinary Commission for the Preservation of Disposable Lawsuits (Comissão Interdisciplinar de Preservação de Processos Judiciais Aptos a Descarte – COMINTER) has been to get to know and preserve the collection of lawsuits under the custody of the Rio Grande do Sul Judicial Branch. We present here a brief experience report based on our preservation activity in the Judicial Branch’s collection. From 2011 to the end of 2018, historians analyzed civil and criminal lawsuits in which they identified possibilities for historical research in order to justify their preservation among the different types of processes analyzed (such as bankruptcies, tax collection, bank debts, family custody, etc.), with the definition of criteria for disposal or storage. In order to present part of the collection, we selected, for this report, processes analyzed by the members of COMINTER, pointing out the potential in the Court’s documentation and the possible research interests in different fields of History based on case studies.
