A “Consumers’ Republic” and the consumers of the Republic: historiographic notes and research perspectives

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the relationship between consumption and publicethos. In the first part of the text the debate on the “Consumers’ Republic” is highlighted;in the second part the employability of these conceptions is discussed. It emphasizes thatthe theoretical apprehensions and the political choices by the agents of the time are notin disagreement. The academic production, the conceptions conveyed in the media, andthe “public opinion” converge in many aspects of the debate. Faced with this myriad ofapprehensions, the article seeks to envisage a path of research that responds to the specificcharacteristics of the consumption culture in Brazil.
