Abstract

The paper deals with the brief reign of the Roman emperor Vetranio (Marchto December of 350), investigating the ways he is represented on coins bearing his nameminted in Siscia and Thessalonica. In that sense, I choose two different types (whosereverses show inscriptions like SALVATOR REI PVBLICAE and GAVDIVM REIPVBLICAE, respectively) that closely approximate the “usurper” Vetranio to the Hellenistic-Christian idea of basileia. The latter concept, in turn, served to distinguish a wholeset of practices and symbols related to Constantius II, the “legitimate” emperor who ruledover the eastern part of the Roman Empire precisely at that time.
