This article proposes to analyse the contributions and limitations of the theoretical and methodological tools of cultural studies to research on television reception on the “second screen”. The theoretical discussion is enriched by a survey about ethnographic inspiration that was carried out with viewers of “The Voice Brasil 2014” on two social media: Twitter and Facebook. The aim is to see how research techniques traditionally used by cultural studies in the investigation of reception can be applied to studies of the “second screen”. The biggest challenge found in this type of research was to be able to deal with the whole of “multi-platform television”, i.e., the complex socio-technical network articulated to contemporary reception processes.
Keywords: cultural studies, television reception, second screen.
