Abstract

This research discusses the way in which the editorial lines of the magazines Veja and CartaCapital have defined the coverage held during the trial of the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) about the decriminalization of abortion in cases of anencephaly. The goal was to analyze how journalistic discourse exposed the positioning on the topic. The on-line versions of the publications were analyzed, taking into consideration the coverage dynamics, which, although containing traces of a magazine production, still takes on the digital platform environment features. The journalistic texts were comprehended in their discursivity, in other words, how they develop and produce effects of meaning, working from the theoretical-device of Discourse Analysis. The editorial lines guide the discursive process of publications. Veja, which sought a neutral effect, objectivity and erasing journalist as an intermediary, has positioned itself in a contradictory way: recognizing the advance of the woman’s choice – only in such cases – but delegitimizing the STF decision. CartaCapital already sought to build the image of questioning and analytical, demonstrating in favor of the achievement of women’s reproductive rights.

Keywords: magazine journalist, discourse analysis, abortion.
