Abstract

In this article it is analyzed press councils as a kind of mediatic self-control. Such press councils are seen as the most efficient Media Accountability System (M.A.S.), by grouping all the protagonists of the mediatic system – the public, the news organizations and the journalists. What can be accomplished with this type of instrument? What are the prerequisites for its formation and what are its limits? These questions are addressed through an analysis of the experiences of the German Press Council (Deutscher Presserat). Its importance for the structures of mediatic self-control in Brazil will then be discussed.

Key words: ethics, press councils, Germany.
